First, I want to say THANK YOU to anyone that purchased items on Artsonia with your artist's work. We are 50% of the way there to earning enough money to purchase a document camera for the classroom! My purpose with Artsonia was to have a place for students to show off their work to others and to keep a collection of their work but I am very thankful for the chance to purchase items for our art studio that we otherwise wouldn't be able to purchase. If you have not yet given permission for your child's work to be seen on Artsonia, please email me permission with your student's name, grade and teacher: [email protected]
Secondly, HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR! In January, we will pick up where we left off with some review of expectations for the art centers and our art studio rules. Here is a glimpse of what we will be doing for the rest of the semester.
Kindergarten - They have been working on drawing and collage using table top centers so they can choose where they want to work. After break, we will move into painting and clay - VERY exciting :)
1st Grade - They have learned all about the different kinds of lines around us using the drawing, paint, and collage centers as well as a special project with printmaking. Now, we will move onto the color wheel and learn about the primary and secondary colors and try some hand stitching on burlap.
2nd Grade - The second graders learned about directional lines (horizontal, vertical, diagonal) and the horizon line. Just before break, they were given black, white, red, yellow, and blue and told to explore. They LOVED creating new colors and thinking of their own names for the colors they created. For the rest of the semester, we will talk about value with colors and the primary and secondary colors. We will also work on comparing and contrasting characteristics of art and illustrations in books.
3rd Grade - The third graders learned about warm and cool colors and how they can express emotions so now we are moving on to the element of art - line. They are focusing on how lines can divide space to create new shapes and then we will do some realistic still life drawings and talk about using contour lines to do a drawing. The real challenge will be when we talk about getting feedback and making revisions to art. That can be a touchy subject with kids but is an important skill for any subject area.
4th Grade - Color theory has been the focus for the last two months for the fourth graders as they use the drawing, paint, collage, sculpture, fiber arts, and mosaic centers.. Now we will move on to line and how you can use it to make value and texture as well as describing how art communicates meaning.
5th Grade - The fifth graders learned about how the Principles of Art are used in art and now are applying that to the work they create. They have the drawing, collage, paint, fiber arts, sculpture, and mosaic center to work in and have done some INCREDIBLE work!
The year has been amazing and I am so happy we made the switch to Choice Based Art because I am watching students excel and shine like I never have before!!
And lastly, congratulations to the following students who have art on display in our very own Gallery of the Flyers:
